Having competent professional spotters can significantly increase the income from the live auction. The auctioneer can only be looking one direction at any given point in time; therefore, he or she might miss bids on opposite sides of the room. The auctioneer doesn’t have the ability to socialize with all bidders during the auction. It is the job of the spotters to help bidders get comfortable with the auction process and to mingle with the guest and encourage friendly and fun competitive bidding. This will result in increased live auction yield percentages. While it is possible for volunteers to perform a similar function, their attention span and performance can be limited, and part way through the live auction they may lose focus or interest.

Also volunteers often get confused which bidder is in and which bidder is out. That confuses the bidder and the bidding process then loses its appeal. It is a professional bid spotter’s job to know exactly what is going on during the live auction. He or she knows how to make bidding fun, exciting and competitive… which means more money for your event. One or two bid step increases on a single item in the live auction can pay for the cost of hiring professional bid spotters. Talk to the auctioneerist on how her trained and certified bid spotters can help raise revenue in your live auction.
